Revised Family trees

Family members are pretty much verified. However, there is a huge discrepancy with the birth dates of Annie and Martha. There is no way Annie could be born in Oct 1851 and Martha in Feb 1852. It could be possible that Annie was born on 9 Nov 1858, although she has always claimed to be older. **Update** I incorrectly wrote daughter Mary's birthyear, it should be 1837.

James and Jane O'Kane

In the first UHF report,  a family for James and Jane Kane is found a census for the local Roman Catholic church parish, dated 1886-1887. UHF also questioned the age of James, 24, noting that the parents were only 40, and thought it likely that the age was incorrect.

Let me digress a bit, and state that James, the husband of Jane,  would be James Jr, son of James O'Kane who was born in  1798. This James is the 'John' in the will of his father. This, then, would make James Jr's son, James, in the picture to the left, James the third. James Jr. inherited property #7 in 1901 according to the Valuation Revisions books.

Tenancy clues to date of Mary O'Kane's death

It didn't occur to me at the time I read the 2nd UHF report, but after finding the Valuation Revision Books and looking at the images, I realized when Mary, James Kane's wife had died.

In his will, James requests that his wife, Mary, live in the manner she was accustomed to. So she stayed in Property #7 and ran the household as she always did.

Crebilly Property #7's Tenancy

This is an image of the 1862 Griffith Valuation for Crebilly.
From the second UHF report, a list of the tenants are given for property #7 in Crebilly. This was done to show how the property went from one Kane family member to another, staying within the family.

1872 will of James Kane ***Updated 6 Sep 2014***

The first major piece of documentation we have is a will for James Kane of Craigbilly (aka Crebilly). We know that Annie O'Keane's (married name: Glumaz) father's name was James and that he was from Craigbilly (and deceased in 1876) from her marriage announcement in the Liverpool Mercury newspaper.

This is Certainly Almost Your Family - the Second Time Around

I realized that I needed to go over the second document before I start breaking down what information we have on the family.

...This Is Almost Certainly Your Ancestral Family....1st Report

When Marina first started looking into the O'Kane/Keane side of her family, she had hired the Ulster Historical Foundation (UHF) to see what information they could find on her great great grandma, Annie O'Keane (Kane). Well, Annie still proved to be elusive, even to UHF.

I also failed to mention other people who so generously contributed photos like Anne Berchelmann's neice Ashley Sholiton and Nell Arriaga's grandchild Virginia Bush Arriaga and my cousin Gail Malley and Annelizabeth Gogniat. If I failed to mention you now, don't think I won't.

A Message from Marina

This is a great blog Cathy! Thanks to everyone who checks us out. Here's the thing, (something I learned from Cathy) even if you suspect our families are connected, go on your hunches. Just because you don't seem to recognize anyone in our pictures, or names, please consider checking out our blog.

Crebilly - 1862 vs 2014

I thought it would be fun to compare the map of Crebilly from the Griffith's Valuation that was done circa 1862 and the satellite map from Google.

Annie's Family Tree

Here is Annie O'Keane's family tree. This is basically culled from what I deem to be primary sources. Her marriage record from St. Peters Catholic church, her marriage notice in the Liverpool Mercury newspaper, and the birth/baptismal records of her children.

It All Sounds the Same

Kane, Keane, Kean, Kain, Kaine, Caine, Cain, Cane. With or without the O in front, it's still "Kane".

Uncommon Start

What does it take to get started to look for your ancestors??? Well, for us, it was making a family connection. I had been trying to find information about my granddad Pachin's grandfather, José María Marxuach Echevarria and after about 5 years of searching, a couple of pictures from my aunt, and contacting the head editor of Puerto Rican Military History for Wikipedia, I was connected to extended family members of the Marxuach family, who at the time were in the midst of planning a family reunion in Spain. Because of this, I decided to attempt to notify family members of my grandfather's siblings.

This is when Marina and I started working together,

What We're About:

We are two cousins, Marina and Cathy, who have been  wrapped up discovering our family ancestors and history for the last 5 years. As is more likely to happen than not, we have hit a few snags, bumps and road blocks along our way. This blog focuses on the O'Kanes of Crebilly, Ballymena, Co. Antrim of Ireland. This is Marina's father's paternal's paternal's maternal's side or in other words, her great, great grandmother Annie's side.
